Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University
(SMU). A year has passed since the birth of
our new University. Our students continue
to receive support from our Academic
 Guardians, the Centre for Academic
 Excellence, Mentors and Student
Health centre in order ensure that our
 students who enrol for MBChB,
MBChB Extended Degree Curriculum
 Programme (ECP), Diagnostic
Radiography as well as Post-Graduate
programmes receive academic/social
/health support. The MBChB ECP
was introduced especially for students
from quintile 1 and 2 Schools in order
to give them an opportunity to enter
the mainstream MBChB programme
on successfully completing the first
 year of the course.

Our 3 year Radiography programme
will in the near future be changed to a
4 year programme, in line with the other
 professions allied to Medicine. Radiography
students are given the opportunity to
experience a variety of imaging modalities
that have changed quite rapidly in the past
5 years with the advent of Digital Technology.
A Radiographic Skills Laboratory is available
for students to practice positioning and imaging
techniques before they perform radiography on patients.
Radiography students are required to work
under supervision during the normal working
week days, week-ends and at night so that
they can experience a variety of diseases/trauma
that patients present with and assist the clinicians
in making swift diagnoses.

The curriculum is constantly under review
with the “students’ voices”. This is a very
important aspect with regard to our social
accountability towards our students
who have an opportunity at all levels
of study to give us guidance on our academic
 performance.
Students experience what it is to be a
 clinician/radiographer very early in their
programme and are able to establish whether
indeed the profession they embarked upon
is one that they would actually want to pursue.
Academic guardians are assigned to students
from the first to the final year to assist with
study techniques, time management and
psychosocial problems. You are urged to
make use of these facilities when required
in order to ensure that you are successful
 in your career choice.

Our Post-Graduate Programmes continue
to give our students a variety of choices
for developing their professional careers
in specialities of their choice. To this end
a number of postgraduate Skills Laboratories
have been construction to assist with either
live or virtual skills development especially in
the surgical disciplines such as General Surgery,
Urology, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and Plastics
and Reconstructive Surgery. In the near future,
both our undergraduate and postgraduate students
will be able to view “live” surgical procedures in
venues distant from the operating theatre.
A viewing gallery is under construction for
students to view autopsies for both medical
 and forensic investigations. We endeavour
to ensure that our research output in all
fields of study continues to improve in order
for us to publish papers in peer-reviewed
journals. SMU is an organization with a
social conscience. We are recognized
 for providing unsurpassed primary
care to underserved communities, thus
our aim is to produce exceptional students,
clinicians and researchers.
